By Rita Joe / Rebecca Thomas
Illustrated by Pauline Young
One of Rita Joe’s most influential poems, I Lost My Talk tells the revered Mi’kmaw elder’s childhood story of losing her language while living at the residential school in Shubenacadie. Joe’s powerful words explore and celebrate the survival of Mi’kmaw culture and language despite its attempted eradication. Now, it’s published for the first time as an illustrated children’s book, paired with I’m Finding My Talk by Rebecca Thomas. As a second-generation residential school survivor, Thomas reflects on working through the destructive effects of colonialism and rediscovering community and culture. Colourful and evocative illustrations by Mi’kmaw artist Pauline Young complement both books.
